In the spring of 2015 I made a set of paintings in Portsmouth. In these paintings of urban and marine subjects I sought to project an elemental sense of the wind, light, sky and sea. With special permission from the City of Portsmouth and the owner of South Parade Pier, I set up my easel on vantage points on the roof of the Civic Offices and on the pier.
These locations offered sweeping views across the City and the Solent. Using a fluid, loose technique I included local landmarks within a wide scope of vision. I want the viewer to be made aware of the locality within the broad perspective of the paintings. During those weeks I also made numerous line drawings in ink in which I aimed for a sense of form and movement.
